Description

Engaging families in their children’s education at a juvenile justice facility is critical to improving student outcomes, but it is not always easy to do. NDTAC’s Webinar, "Overcoming Common Challenges: Tips on Engaging Families at Juvenile Justice Facility Schools," provided constructive examples of ways that facilities can engage families of children in facility school programs.

The two presenters who joined NDTAC for this Webinar have extensive knowledge of family involvement.

  • Trina Osher, president of Huff Osher Consulting Inc. and family engagement expert, introduced the Center’s updated, and expanded publications, Facility Toolkit for Engaging Families in Their Child’s Education at a Juvenile Justice Facility and Family Guide to Getting Involved in Your Child’s Education at a Juvenile Justice Facility. Her presentation highlighted several overarching strategies that a family can employ to build a relationship with its child’s facility education program and to help promote school completion and a successful transition to adulthood.
  • Brenda Johnson, long-time family coordinator, and Lia Venchi, teacher/literacy specialist, with the Stadium View Academy, a short-term juvenile justice facility school in Minneapolis, Minnesota, shared share how the school has successfully engaged parents and families.
