NDTAC has compiled an events calendar featuring conferences and organizational meetings that address issues in juvenile justice, transition, special education, foster care, and more. We draw our listings from Web sites such as the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), the National Criminal Justice Reference Service, and the National Resource Center on Youth Services — organizations that are committed to serving delinquent, neglected, or at-risk populations. Reclaiming Youth Roots and Wings Conference
September 18, 2008 and September 19-20, 2008| Detroit, Michigan


This conference explores the roots of the reclaiming youth philosophy and its legacy of strength–based programs. A strong evidence base blends democratic values, research, practice expertise, and the voices of families and youth. Recent brain research extends this approach which is now called the bio-ecological model. Conference faculty consists of key researchers and practitioners world-wide. Join with professionals, policy leaders, and advocates committed to building positive environments for all youth.

Supporting Children Living with Grief and Trauma: A Multidisciplinary Approach
October 8 - 9, 2008 | Reno, Nevada


This conference will highlight the unique ways that children experience grief and trauma, and how victim service providers and allied professionals can best serve children suffering from grief. The conference will explore how to recognize the signs of grief and trauma in children, effective ways to intervene with children experiencing grief, how victim service providers can assist families of these children, and how victim service providers and allied professionals can work together to provide more effective services to grieving children.


Breakthrough Strategies to Teach and Counsel Troubled Youth
October 9 - 10, 2008 | Portland, Oregon


This workshop delivers 200 ready-to-use strategies to help turnaround defiant, unmotivated, difficult, truant, violent, conduct disordered, oppositional, emotionally disturbed, depressed, non-compliant, learning disabled, or withdrawn youth and children ages 5 through 18. It offers updated, innovative solutions that may be more effective than conventional approaches. Workshop participants will be asked to name the specific problem areas and ages that they want to cover during the course, and are expected to walk out the door at the end of the seminar with 200 problem-stopping answers.

Behind Closed Doors: Preventing, Responding, Investigating, and Prosecuting Sexual Abuse in Juvenile Justice Facilities
December 10 - 12, 2008 | Corpus Christi, Texas


This multi-track seminar will focus on prevention of, responses to, and effective investigation and prosecution of sexual abuse in juvenile facilities. Expected attendants include facility administrators, supervisory personnel, upper and mid-level management, internal investigators, medical and mental health providers, detention and correctional officers, and other professionals who have contact with incarcerated youth.
