Over the next several weeks, the Center will be devoting its Web resources and events to exploring the practice of mentoring as an effective intervention strategy for youth who are delinquent or high risk. NDTAC supports mentoring as a strategy for delinquency prevention and intervention, as mentoring provides young people positive relationships with supportive and caring adults. Research shows that for youth who lack stable relationships and/or positive role models in their lives, mentoring helps them improve academic achievement, build a stronger sense of self-worth, improve relationships with parents and other adults, and decrease the likelihood of negative behaviors.
Educational success for delinquent youth will require caring adults who prioritize education and the maximization of potential in youth who often will not have faith in their own ability to succeed. NDTAC suggests adding long-term mentoring, with support for mentees and mentors, to your toolbox and chart the difference in outcomes for students returning to communities from institutions for delinquent youth. » more
