Building Blocks Community Assessment:
A Blueprint for Community Change

Authors: Hildy Saizow and Nancy Welch

Following the pilot Maryvale community assessment, the community assessment model described in A Blueprint for Community Change was developed. In alignment with the goals of Arizona's Building Blocks Initiative, this community assessment model expands on traditional needs assessments while maintaining focus on a specific place. The model divides the assessment process into six key steps:

  1. Create a community assessment team
  2. Reach out to key sectors of the community
  3. Develop a profile of community well-being
  4. Assess need though community consultation
  5. Assess community resources
  6. Establish community priorities and action plans

For each step, there are concrete examples of sample issues, concerns, outcomes, and specific methods to aid the successful completion of the assessment process. A Blueprint for Community Change concludes with a brief discussion of how the assessment process needs to be accompanied by an appropriate response to the community's input with leadership, resources, and collaborative partnerships.
