Safe, Supportive and Successful Schools:
Step by Step

Authors: David Osher, Kevin Dwyer, and Stephanie Jackson

Educational professionals envision schools with positive, nurturing climates - free from emotional stress and physical violence - where all children can learn and grow. This all-inclusive resource will help translate this vision into a comprehensive action plan, from development and implementation to sustaining and regulating. It will also help your planning team avoid common mistakes by providing vital information in advance: needs assessments, financial planning, funding resources, staff support strategies, surveys, checklists, and much more.

One major step of implementing any program is research: What works in other schools? How did they get started? What does the research say? Safe, Supportive, and Successful Schools Step by Step has done the research for you. One of the most powerful elements of this product is that it offers descriptions, data, and contact information for thirty programs that are currently operating in schools across the nation; you can determine what is right for your environment. The programs function on three basic levels:

  • Schoolwide Interventions, for ALL students: Focusing on the social, ethical, and emotional development of all students
  • Early Interventions, for SOME students: Concentrating on modifying the patterns of students with minor behavioral issues
  • Intensive Interventions, for FEW students: Offering strategies to engage students with significant emotional and behavioral disorders in appropriate interactions

Your school will benefit from this tool, which offers the flexibility to match any school culture and budget. In addition, the enclosed CD-ROM provides the following three components: an Early Warning, Timely Response guide that helps you identify and reach out to troubled students; an Action Guide that provides intervention suggestions; and an award-winning video that shows the theory-based research put into practice. Text and reproducibles are also included.
